Motoi Oyane

Private Equity Investor, Unlocking Japan's Business Potential

Meet Motoi Oyane
Private Equity Investor, Unlocking Japan's Business Potential 📈

After studying mathematics in college, Motoi Oyane was drawn to the certainty and beauty of a discipline built on objective truth. But over time, he became equally fascinated by the ambiguity of the real world, where businesses, industries, and societies can be shaped and transformed. That curiosity eventually led him from mathematics into business and finance.

Today, he works in private equity, partnering with companies to unlock growth, drive innovation, and eliminate inefficiencies. After starting his career in consulting, he transitioned into investing with a long-term mission: helping build a stronger private equity industry in Japan and supporting companies that have the potential to compete on the global stage.

Outside of work, he's an avid reader of history, particularly Japan's transformation from the Meiji Restoration to the present. He believes understanding the country's past offers valuable insight into its future potential.

What are you currently building?

A career in private equity centered on helping Japanese companies grow through innovation, operational improvement, and long-term value creation. He also hopes to contribute to the development of Japan's private equity industry, which is still relatively young compared to markets like the United States.

What excites you about Japan?

Living abroad in Abu Dhabi, Beijing, and later Boston gave him the opportunity to see Japan from an outside perspective. While Japan is celebrated globally for anime, food, and pop culture, he was frustrated (悔しかった) that its world-class companies and innovation were rarely part of the conversation. Beyond automotive, gaming, consumer electronics, and iconic brands like Kewpie mayonnaise, countless Japanese businesses and industries deserve far greater global recognition. What excites him most about Japan is helping the world discover those overlooked stories.

A risk that changed your trajectory?

Stepping outside of mathematics and deliberately placing himself in unfamiliar environments shaped his path. Studying subjects ranging from liberal arts and finance to design and international relations, along with living abroad, broadened his perspective and eventually led him into business and finance. Seeing Japan from the outside gave him a deeper appreciation of both its strengths and its untapped potential.

A habit that has had the biggest impact?

Maintaining a positive mindset. He believes "it will all work out in the end", and that optimism allows him to stay composed through challenges while continuing to put in the hard work required to achieve meaningful results.

Advice for your 20s?

Don't feel pressured to commit to a single path too early. People are capable of reinventing themselves throughout their lives, so it's never too late to explore new directions until you find your true calling.
